I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone mistaken a turtle for a tortoise. One of the facts that I came across is that they aren’t the same thing. In fact, the word turtle is what describes the entire species. The right word that we should use though to determine this species group is testudine. So, this means that we have likely used the word incorrectly for as long as we’ve known it. But, there are more interesting turtle facts that we can learn.

1. They are Old

I remember learning about how long turtle life spans can be. It’s one of the most mind-boggling things to find out. If we keep them around as pets, they can even outlive us. In some cases, turtles can live up to 150 years. The fact of the matter is that our turtle pets aren’t ordinary. They have been around for millions of years. In fact, they’re said to have evolved from reptiles. When we go through our pages, we’ll see that we have various species of turtle. Even the shells that they have differ.

2. Their Shells are Unique

A turtle’s shell is nothing more than a unique rib cage. This means that it forms part of their vertebral column. Many of us don’t know that turtles have more than one shell. So, when we see a turtle with a lower shell in our coloring pages, we shouldn’t think that it’s a mistake. It should be an interesting discovery that we can share with our kids as we color our pages. This lower shell is very normal. Actually, it joins with the upper shell to connect with the sides of its body.

3. They don’t have Teeth

This is likely one of those things that we don’t even consider when we think of turtles. They are unlike most animals that we come across. For instance, they don’t have teeth to eat their food. Instead, they have a mouth that has a beak. They use it to catch their food. This beak that they use is unique because it’s made up out of keratin. This is the same stuff that our fingernails are made up of. In our coloring pages, it’s hard for us to miss this beak. It’s a very notable shape that we can highlight with our colorful pens.

4. They can be Mysterious

How many of us have seen a turtle hatchling in our lifetime? The chances of that are pretty slim. The fact is that these very small turtles live a mysterious life from when they hatch until they are full-sized turtles. After hatching from the shallow waters, they go deep in the sea and spend a lot of years there. They can live up to 20 years without a trace. This has made it so difficult for Marine biologists to give adequate information about turtle hatchlings and how they navigate the different stages of their growth. We would be lucky to see this. Chances are if we get them to hatch in our homes.

5. They can be Huge

Turtles don’t only live for a long time, but they can also be really ginormous. In the ocean, we can get to see various sizes. The same can be said with our fun coloring pages. We have a lot of different sized turtles that we can color in. In real-life, the largest turtle that was ever discovered measured up to 2.5m in length and weighed a total of 900kg. This is huge in any standard that we can think of. Our coloring pages should be full of turtles that show these variations.
