  • Lepidoptera is the name for a class of insects, including butterflies and moths. It’s easy to see the difference between moths and butterflies. Moths become active when it gets dark, while butterflies enjoy flying during sunny days.
  • The butterfly’s life cycle involves four stages. They include the egg, caterpillar, pupa, and adult butterfly.
  • Butterflies use special glue to stick their eggs to leaves.
  • They can remain in the adult stage from a week to a year. But it also depends on the species.
  • The life span of many butterflies is short: they can live for ten days.
  • How many wings do butterflies have? If you said four, you’re 100% correct.
  • Did you know that the butterflies’ and moths’ wings are only small scales? You can see the scales as bright patterns and stunning colors.
  • The female Queen Alexandra is the giant butterfly worldwide. Its wings can stretch as long as 25cm.
  • But the tiniest butterfly is the Western Blue Pigmy, with a wingspan extending only 2cm.
  • The Birdwing butterflies fly the same way as birds due to their huge, angular wings.
  • Butterflies can only move if there’s heat. They rest in the sunshine to warm up their wings to enable them to fly.
  • Butterflies have a weaker sense of smell than moths.
  • Humans find it more challenging to see many colors than butterflies. Butterflies have a keen sense of identifying colors.
  • The moon is important for moths because they use it for their movements. That’s the reason you might have seen moths flying about human-made lights.
  • Another fantastic thing about butterflies is that they use their feet to taste. The taste receptors help them find the choicest plants and vital nutrients.
  • Many caterpillars are herbivores as they feed on plants.
  • They can also eat nectar from flowers.
  • Monarch butterflies can travel long distances as they migrate. They can hit more than 250 miles or 400 km. And when they reach their destination, the females will lay eggs to produce a new crop of monarchs. These new butterflies will return to their former places to complete the life cycle.
